Through two weeks of preseason action in the NFC North, QBs have basically been the entire story from some cheesehead-turned-Viking to the Lions struggling rookie. Here’s what you need to know about the teams in the NFC North halfway through the preseason:
Detroit Lions – The Lions lost their first preseason game since 2007 with a 27-10 drubbing at the hands of the Cleveland Browns. The big story here was Matthew Stafford getting his first professional start. For Stafford this was clearly one to forget as he went 5/13 with a pick inside the Browns’ red zone. He frequently did not look composed in the pocket, and I remain convinced that Daunte Culpepper will get the starting nod in week one. I am also convinced that the Lions will be 0-6 going into the bye week. Don’t believe me? Look at the quality of opponents leading up to week seven.
Chicago Bears – Jay Cutler’s first game at home was much better than the one he displayed on the road in preseason game number one. He put up some solid numbers against the Giants, and combined with Matt Forte, should be a solid complement to a Bears team looking for a steady hand at QB. This team is not without questions, but who isn’t in the North?
Green Bay Packers – The elder statesman of QBs in the NFC North, Aaron Rodgers has no shortage of weapons around him. Rodgers has been very steady, and combined with a defense stacked with top LBs, the Packers will be prepared to defend frozen Lambeau well into December. RBs Grant and Sutton are a youthful 1-2 punch for the Pack.
Minnesota Vikings – Brett Favre will be the selfish story all year for this team – he may also be the main reason why this team does not live up to its full potential. It’s only a matter of time before chatter renews about Brad Childress’ job and when Rosenfels or Jackson should get the nod. What may have made Packers fans ill a few weeks ago could turn into great joy in Green Bay if he tries to force too many throws with that bum shoulder.
